Gearing Up

Getting ready to start farming in rainy Oregon, I have spent a lot of time researching the best gear that will keep me warm and dry.  These are the two purchases that I am most excited about.

Carharrt Vest: This thin vest is durable and surprisingly warm as it is quilt lined.  It is also super thin making it easy to layer.

L.L. Bean boots: Most importantly keep your feet dry.  These shoes are particularly helpful as they are rubber and lined with Gortex.  Probably my favorite feature however is that they are easy to slip on and off.

Carrots growing together is always my favorite discovery while harvesting. It keeps the day interesting to see the cool ways that things can grow in nature.  Here is a picture of some that I found this summer.  Buzzfeed.com, a website that I love and read often, has made a list of their own.  Check out more carrot hugs here!

a great New York Times article on the fight to keep land, food and labor local.

This is such a great idea.  I love the connection between farming and yoga.  To me they are both incredibly therapeutic.  Farming takes a lot out of your body and yoga is an importnat way to realign yourself and keep your body strong.  Both of these practices are also great ways to build a strong and healthy community.

Unfortunately funding for this project has been put on hold but I hope they continue soon.  You can get more information at their website.

I finally purchased my flights to go west.  In all of this time of making lists and plans to prepare, this was one thing that oddly enough I hadn’t thought about.  I got it just in time I guess.  I am counting down the days until I can be on the west coast and back on a farm!

A photo of me taken for an article on Quail Hill Farm where I was working last summer. I’m so glad that I got to have my first big experience farming there as it was such a beautiful atmosphere with an incredibly large and welcoming community.
It was great to see a website that I respect so much like the Kitchn take interest in some young farmers.  Read my co-workers interviews as well as my own here!
I’m excited to do it all again this coming season on the West Coast.
